Motivational Session @"ADITYA INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES AND RESEARCH "
Motivational Session @"ADITYA INSTITUTE
OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES AND RESEARCH "
A
very satisfying and a humbling experience conducting a motivational
session (HOPE FACTORY ) for 130 management students at "ADITYA INSTITUTE
OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES AND RESEARCH " in mumbai , India.
I hope the
students are charged enough to face all
kinds of hurricanes, and tornadoes that life has to offer. Very happy
that I completed the entire session inspite of the air conditioning
system and the sound system giving way right in the middle of the
session, feeling suffocated and dead tired due to sweating throughout.
I
must mention that the management is extremely hospitable and focused.
The institute is immaculate and simply brilliant otherwise. Proud to
have an institute as fantastic as this one in mumbai.I thank the entire
management from bottom of my heart.
Determination is the wake-up call to the human will.
You may not be there yet, but you are closer than you were yesterday and simply.
Today is the tomorrow that you worried about yesterday and tomorrow is the day after tomorrow that you worried about day before yesterday.

The Answer lies Within
One sure thing is that nothing is for sure. Nothing in life is Black or White. Each and everything is Grey. The one and only thing you can feel, touch, see, hear precisely are YOU. You are the only one who makes things black or white by the way you see it.
You may judge people, events, inventions, discoveries, incidents, appearance and a lot more. In fact, you judge everything you sense. Whether it’s a conscious judgment or an unconscious one, you have a conclusion or ‘perception’ of each little thing in your surroundings. And your perception is never exactly the same as that of another individual.
Always remember, the only thing you can be sure of is YOURSELF. Looking deep within yourself will enable you to discover your unique pattern of thoughts that make you react in a particular pattern. Changing this pattern over time becomes important in order to grow in different directions of Life. But we are usually unaware of our weaknesses and moreover, we do not have the time to recognize our own perceptions because we are so busy perceiving the outer world. We are unaware of most of our thought patterns. Most of our behavior is automatic.
Firstly, it is important to know how we perceive ourselves. Having a self-image generally has its own advantage and disadvantage. The advantage is that it makes us feel belonged. But in real we only belong to ourselves. We don’t have to hang on to our self-image over a long period. Our self-image is generally based on past experiences. We need to focus on our Situation more than we focus on our entire life as a basis of our self-image. If we focus on our entire life as a basis, learned behavior and memories play a part in our decisions, which is irrelevant for our own real situation.
Secondly, generalization is another important aspect of avoiding conflict. To what extent do we generalize our situations with others? More often than not, we generalize and react to stimuli the way others do, as it’s easier. But sometimes, our outcomes do not match of that of other’s even when we respond to a situation in exactly the same way as they did.
People around us are our greatest influences. We unknowingly follow their patterns. In this situation, we must just follow our instincts and trust it. Every decision has its own consequences. Courage does not lie in doing the right thing; it lies in being able to bear the consequences of your doings. Knowing which one is bearable will enable you to take better decisions.
Lastly,
being good is not about the rights and wrongs we have learnt from our
ancestors. It is all about knowing what is right or wrong for yourself by
experimenting. If you make a mistake, you will only learn from it for a better
future. This will just simplify your life. But if you always choose to follow
another influence’s pattern, you might never know what could ‘have been’ if you
would’ve followed a new pattern.
Writing our options down and calculating
the pros and cons of each option is a good way to make decisions. But an
excellent way of making decisions is ‘Following your Gut’.

Depression makes us Lazy or laziness makes us depressed?
Depression is just a word we use to replace
the real fact of being mentally lazy. We may be active and strong in our daily
activities but our mind seems empty or numb. Emotions of course, play an
important role in the way we feel every day. I strongly believe, if hormones
control our emotions, our emotions can control them. It sounds cliché but my
own personal experience has made me believe that no matter how miserable you
feel, you can always have certain amount of control over your state of mind.
Before I go to the scientific explanation
of how depression affects our efficiency, I want you to think about what really
makes you depressed. What kind of thoughts, tensions or worries make you feel
low and incapable?
Now, think whether these thoughts are
directly the reason for your depression or is it something you associate with
these thoughts. Most of the times, it is not that one thought that makes us
depressed but a number of associations that lead us deep within our
subconscious mind and activate some emotions from the past. Being aware of your
thoughts is the first step to gaining any kind of minimum control over your
state of mind.

state of mind.
If she is aware of this thought and right
after she witnesses this, she distracts herself by shopping or having an ice
cream, she is attributing a positive state of mind to the incident. This forms
a link between the incident and the state of mind. She may not feel the same
way about a bike accident anymore. She might now be able to stay calm whenever
she witnesses a bike accident in future.
If she would have stopped, watched and
thought more about the accident, it might have made her feel anxious or
terrified.
Our actions play an important role. Actions
lead to thoughts, body feelings and emotions. These three are linked to States
of mind.
Another question that arises is about the
inefficiency in daily chores in a depressed state. Most often when we are
depressed, we don’t feel like eating, dressing up or anything that is basic for
us in a relatively healthy state of mind. Feels like there is no strength or
will within us to do anything.
The real cause for this is that when we
think, some neurons are activated and that’s how the thoughts function. But
when we think about a certain thing constantly, our neurons pass this message
to other neurons and the message spreads. Thinking intensely about a situation
causes al the brain neurons to participate in just one activity. This leads to
a conflict in our mind. The sub-conscious mind is trained to carry out some
chores daily while all then neurons which are supposed to send the signals for
carrying out those chores are busy stressing on this One thought that is
bothering us. The conflict continues as we avoid ignore our sub conscious signals
for completion of daily tasks. By doing this we just train our mind to
avoid the messages of the sub-conscious mind and this is how we unknowingly
re-program it to drift away from the normal program.
I hope this has helped you to understand the basic mechanisms of depression.
In my next article I will explain how we can avoid conflicting principles that cause depression.

Kick-start your Mental Engine
Our mind plays a very important role in
determining how we feel about ourselves. Which category of thinkers do we
generalize ourselves with? Why do we always feel there is something missing in
us?
That incomplete feeling often makes us feel
worthless. Every person, even the ones who have everything they ever wished
for, go through a long phase of low self-esteem which generates a negative
self-concept. Our locus of control often shifts from internal to external in
this very phase of life. We are often aware of this difficult phase, but we do
not know what to do about it.
Too much suppression in the sub-conscious
mind often leads to overload. This overload then leads to unreasonable
depression which demotivate us to take any further step to improve ourselves.
People become stagnant in their thoughts and actions. They are unable to cope
with any more negative situations and this often leads to denial.
I have thought of some ways that can help
everyone to fight de-motivation.
Bribe yourself
Even though bribing is wrong sometimes it
can help you cope with demotivating situations. You can always offer yourself a
treat in order to complete some work that you do not feel like doing but not
doing it could harm your future progress.
For example: some days you might get too
bored to go and exercise- this usually happens in the beginnings. You can
always cook your favourite meal after a good five kilometre run.
This method would not become a habit if you
are aware of your state of mind while doing so.
Plan your days
Planning plays a major role in helping us
grow. Setting your priorities straight for each day is important in order to
steadily complete your tasks. You need to believe in your plan and follow it
dedicatedly.
Add an X-factor to your day
Every day is a new day. Each day should be
treated as a special gift from God. We often imagine ourselves doing certain
things but we never succeed in doing them in real. Most of us don’t find the
time to complete small tasks.
Make a ‘wish list’ of things you wish to
do. For example: going to office or college by bicycle, visiting a library,
reading an important article, picking up some particular article from the
store, trying a new wine or anything you have in mind.
Set each activity for a day. These
small things give us loads of pleasure. If you are waiting to ‘have enough
time’ to do something, just stop waiting and start Acting on it.
Act immediately
Too much gap between
Thought-Decision-Action can lead to confusion and later lead to regret which
may cause depression. Acting as soon as you decide is very important. Don’t let
yourself ‘let go’ on something you feel is important. Act before something
allows you to feel demotivated.
Do not generalize situations with your past
experiences
You may have had bad experiences before, do
not allow yourself to feel demotivated by generalizing situations with past
experiences. Take a Chance. You are not same person that you were yesterday.
You may handle situations much more easily as you’ve grown up since you last
faced a similar situation. And always remember ‘Nothing happens twice exactly
the same way’. Even if you screw up once again, you will learn something more
than you learnt the last time you screwed up.
Incorporate these habits in your life and
observe the changes. Add your feedback and questions in the comments. I would
be more than happy to reply.
In my next article I will expend some
knowledge on ‘how we can become aware of the start of our depressed state and
combat it before it can get bigger’.
Stay tuned for some more Positive Living
Tips.
